Shopping

There is a wide variety of choice from the best known High Street shops to small individual boutiques selling everything from designer wear to second-hand bargains to antique clothes and bric-a-brac. A big advantage is the relatively compact shopping area so that it can easily be covered on foot. The Arndale Centre and The Trafford Centre are large, easily reached shopping complexes in the City of Manchester.

Night life

Pubs and clubs are very much the Manchester scene. There are dozens of late closing bars that are full to overflowing on warm summers evenings. Bars often offer student concessions.

Theatre and the arts

Manchester has numerous theatres and theatre companies and the quality of performance is first rate. Students can get in for very reasonable rates. There are also over 90 cinemas showing a wide variety of mainstream and alternative films.

Museums, art galleries, the new Lowry Centre at Salford Quays, the Bridgewater Hall and the Hallé Orchestra - this is to mention just a few of the opportunities available in and around the city. Manchester's links with all kinds of music are long and famous and we have always been at the forefront of popular as well as jazz and classical music. The Royal Northern College of Music is on the Manchester University Campus.

Sport

Best known has to be Manchester United FC but also Manchester City FC, Lancashire Cricket Club, Manchester Storm (ice Hockey) and Manchester Giants (basketball) lay claim to being among the country's best. There are golf courses and clubs, swimming pools (including the new Olympic pool), the Manchester Velodrome, speedway and dog tracks. Manchester, as the host city for the Commonwealth Games of 2002, has benefited from a massive re-development of many of the sports facilities across the city.

Travel

Buses and trains are plentiful and transport from the School and University to the city centre is quick and simple. There is a fast inter-city rail service to London and rail links to most areas in the country.

Excellent networks of roads and motorways (M60, M 61, M62, M6) to and from the city make travel by car easy.

The Peak District National Park, the Lake District and Snowdonia National Park are within easy reach. Blackpool andNorth Wales are also easily accessible.

You can fly anywhere from Manchester's International Airport, only 20 minutes by bus from the School.
