Dear Prospective Student
*The
Manchester School of Physiotherapy is moving!
The Manchester School of Physiotherapy (MSOP) is one of the largest
and most successful of the UK providers of undergraduate and post
graduate physiotherapy education. We run a range of courses including
an undergraduate physiotherapy programme, successful completion
of which leads to a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree, a licence to
practise physiotherapy from the Health Professions Council, and
eligibility for membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
We are currently
part of Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s Hospital
NHS Trust and have recently reviewed our position as the only school
of physiotherapy still in the NHS. We are delighted to announce
that we will be moving into Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)
from September 2003.
Extensive consultation
has convinced us that a move to MMU will enhance our educational
provision and that becoming fully integrated into a university will
allow students to access a wider range of services than are currently
available. You will have access to enhanced library and IT facilities,
and be part of an active Students Union. Universities have more
support facilities for students than we are able to provide at MSOP,
for instance specialised disability support staff, and more extensive
welfare support.
The quality of
the educational programme at MSOP is, and will continue to be, overseen
by a number of external agencies. The Joint Validating Committee
(JVC) consists of representatives of both the professional body
(the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy) and the statutory body
(the Health Professions Council). They ensure that all programmes
leading to the award of BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy are of a high standard
and they will work with us to ensure the move maintains this.
The Cumbria and
Lancashire Workforce Development Confederation have a contract with
us to provide the education which leads to a licence to practise
physiotherapy. This is the body which pays for the NHS bursary places
we provide, and they have been fully involved in our discussions
and support the move to MMU.
Physically
MSOP will continue to be located in our existing premises until
January 2004 when we will move into high quality accommodation on
MMU’s Elizabeth Gaskell campus. This is situated on Hathersage
Road, a few minutes walk from our existing site. Both staff and
students will benefit from a move which will make us part of a University
campus and bring MSOP in line with other physiotherapy programmes
in the UK. We will continue to maintain our close links with the
NHS and to have access to a range of high quality clinical placements
throughout the North West.
You
can be assured that the programme offered will remain the same,
and the degree will still lead to a licence to practise physiotherapy
and eligibility for state registration and chartered status.
I realise that
this is a crucial time for you in making up your mind where you
would like to go to study physiotherapy. In considering Manchester
I hope you will bear in mind that as a student here you will be
part of a lively community of students at one of the oldest and
largest schools of physiotherapy in the UK. A move to MMU will only
add to your experience as a student here by improving even further
the facilities and education we offer. The educational programme
will continue to be the same and if you have been to an Open Day
or for an interview then everything you were told about the course
will be the same; what will change is the physical site and the
name of the awarding university.
The aim of all
this is to provide our students with an even better educational
experience and to continue to deliver a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
programme, MSc programmes and a range of other educational opportunities
that has made MSOP one of the most popular, and highly regarded,
schools of physiotherapy in the UK.
I hope that this
provides you with the information you need to make your decision
about coming to Manchester. If you have any further questions then
please do not hesitate to contact us.
Yours sincerely
Dr
Pennie Roberts PhD., MCSP., SRP.,
