Third year

Specialist areas of physiotherapy are considered in the third year of the course. Knowledge from previous years continues to be integrated into this learning, taking the student to a higher level of understanding and application.

Areas covered are as follows:

Rehabilitation unit

  • Rheumatology
  • Women's health
  • Paediatrics
  • Mental health
  • Oncology
  • Burns and plastic surgery
  • Advanced Physiotherapy Studies

For example:

  • Current health management issues
  • Pain measurement
  • Advanced respiratory care
  • Advanced neurology

The programme of Advanced Physiotherapy Studies may vary, but will always allow students to consider aspects of physiotherapy practice to a much greater depth.

Clinical education

Further periods of clinical experience are completed. In addition, the students must complete an elective placement (organised by themselves). This placement can take place anywhere in the world provided that the student is supervised by a qualified physiotherapist. Students must meet, using their own resources, any additional expenses incurred on elective placement.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of:

  • Coursework
  • Undergraduate research project
  • Evaluation of clinical placements
  • Written examination

Second and third year clinical and academic assessment will contribute to the final honours award.

Successful candidates will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in physiotherapy, are approved for membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and become eligible for state registration as a physiotherapist
